Today, Judith Hackitt, the Chair of the Health and Safety Executive begins her second term of appointment and has renewed her promises to the health and safety industry.
Commenting on the progress the HSE needs to make, Hackitt commented that reducing the rate of workplace accidents and work-related ill health is her first priority and where she would like to see the greatest inroads. In particular she is looking to focus on occupational ill health, hoping to put this issue on the same footing as workplace injuries. This will involve raising awareness of risks in the workplace.
Hackitt also raised the point of restoring the reputation of health and safety, which is a sentiment Britannia shares. If health and safety cannot be taken seriously by both industry workers and members of the public, it is definitely an uphill struggle.
