This week, a story has hit the news highlighting the importance of health and safety training. The media often do a good job of creating myths and hype surrounding the subject of ‘elf and safety’ but following the sentencing of two major construction companies after a fatality on a Swansea building site, the importance of being safe in the workplace is really put into plain daylight.
Neither firm had managed to implement effective health and safety management systems, despite warnings from health and safety consultants, and after being found negligent for the fatality one was fined £130,000 plus damages.
“Unfortunately it is these rare, but tragic events which really lay out the importance of health and safety and this importance is heightened when you are working in such a dangerous industry as construction which is where the highest proportions of fatalities at work take place,” commented Colin Wright, Managing Director of Britannia Safety and Training. “When incidents such as these occur, hindsight becomes a fine thing and if time had been taken to properly train employees to work safely onsite these events could have been avoided.”
Britannia recommends SMSTS training for any site manager, or person responsible for construction tasks on site. The SMSTS training course is a comprehensive course, including both theoretical knowledge surrounding legislation and also practical examples of hazards in the workplace. Lasting 5 days, delegates go away with the confidence that they can run a safe site and have the tools to reduce the risks to those working alongside them.
